The relationship ended. The pattern didn't.
The after-effects of an abusive or controlling relationship outlast the relationship itself. The scanning, the second-guessing of your own memory, the habit of making yourself smaller so the room stays calm, long after there is no one left to manage.
What this work is for
This is the page for what an abusive or controlling relationship leaves behind. Childhood trauma that is showing up now in adult relationships. Post-traumatic stress and complex post-traumatic stress. The tactics have names, and naming them usually helps: gaslighting, isolation, financial control, trauma bonds, and the steady minimizing that made you doubt your own account. We work with the imprint they left, not with the person who left it.
What this work is not
I do not specialize in active domestic violence situations, and I am telling you that plainly rather than letting you find out later. If you are currently living with someone who is hurting you, you deserve a clinician and an advocate whose whole practice is built around that, and I would rather help you find them than be the wrong fit at the worst possible time. My work begins with the after-effects.
How I work with it
We go at the pace your nervous system allows. When a specific memory keeps intruding, we may use EMDR to help your brain finish processing it, so it stops arriving as though it is happening now. Drawing on Janina Fisher's parts-based framework, we make sense of the roles you built to stay safe: the one who managed the mood, the one who kept the peace, the one who stopped needing anything. DBT skills give you something concrete for the moments that flood you. Somatic and mindfulness work meets what argument alone cannot reach.
If you are in danger right now
Therapy is not an emergency service, and this page is not the right starting point if you are currently unsafe. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is free, confidential, and open 24 hours a day at 1-800-799-7233.

What it actually looks like.
Some of what people describe:
Replaying conversations from a relationship that ended a long time ago
Reading a mood from the sound of a door, in a house where nobody is angry
Leaving, expecting relief, and feeling worse instead
Struggling to trust your own account of what happened
Finding the same dynamic waiting in the next relationship
Still checking yourself for what you might have done to cause it
What to expect
Sessions are 50 minutes, in person at my Temecula office or by secure telehealth across California and New Jersey. Early sessions are mostly about steadying the ground: what you're managing day to day, what feels urgent, and what you'd like to be different.
We don't start with the worst of it. We build the capacity to go there first, and we only go at all if and when it's useful to you. Nothing about this work requires you to perform the story for me.
Common questions.
- The relationship ended a long time ago. Why is this still affecting me?
- Because your nervous system learned something in it, and learning like that does not expire on a schedule. What kept you safe then is still running now, in situations that no longer call for it. That is not you failing to move on. It is old information that has not been updated yet.
- I was never hit. Does this still count?
- Yes. Coercive control, financial control, isolation, and sustained emotional abuse cause real and lasting harm, and they are often harder to name precisely because there is no bruise to point at. You do not need a physical incident to qualify for support.
- Do you work with people who are still in the relationship?
- Usually not, and I would rather say so upfront. My work is with what an abusive relationship leaves behind rather than with navigating one you are still inside. If you are currently in an unsafe situation, I am glad to point you toward people and services built for exactly that.
- What if I do not remember it all clearly?
- That is extremely common and it is not a sign you are unreliable. Memory under threat does not record in a tidy line. We work with what is there, and gaps are treated as information about how much you were carrying, not as a credibility problem.
